The murder of Arizona rancher Robert Krentz was a political story from the moment his death was reported, particularly to former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, who is trying to unseat Sen. John McCain.

Hayworth called for harsh border control measures throughout his years in Congress and once the murder of Krentz was reported was intent on pointing out his belief that McCain was a late convert to the cause of better border security, including use of the National Guard.

But Hayworth did so by overstating the case, sticking his foot in his mouth in a televised interview in which he said, “I am heartened to hear that as of yesterday not Senator McCain has decided that gee, there could be a military presence on the border. The tragedy is, it’s too late for the Krentz family…”

… McCain’s camp pounced on the gaff, pointing out that McCain has called for National Guard troops on the border several times in the past year. In a press release Wednesday McCain’s campaign said, “It is despicable and offensive that Congressman Hayworth would attempt to exploit a family’s tragedy to score cheap political points.” Adding that Hayworth “should be ashamed of himself.” And
maybe he should. …
