PHOENIX - The race for state attorney general is underway, with two Republicans facing off in what could be a fierce primary fight.
Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne faces off against former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas.
Horne, on KTAR's The Jay Lawrence Show, said if Thomas were elected as attorney general it would not be good for the state.
"The environment for the state would be what it's been in Maricopa County which is an oppressive environment -- the sort of thing you would expect in a Latin American dictatorship or in the Soviet Union, but not in the United States of America.
He said the indictments against other county officials by Thomas had a purpose. "So you have this tremendous accumulation of cases in which he's doing all of this for a reason and the reason is to intimidate."
Horne also said Thomas's election would also be bad for the state's economy.
"The other aspect to this is if you get an out of control prosecutor like this as attorney general, then no business will want to come to Arizona. We will have no economic future. We'll have no ability to develop jobs."
