Cong. JEFF FLAKE - Time to End Earmarks

I hope this email finds you well. I thought I'd send you a short note to let you know what I've been working on back in Washington. Defeating big-government healthcare reform remains the number one priority, but other battles continue.
Most people agree that spending in our nation's capitol is out of control. When in control, we Republicans blew it.

Sure, we cut taxes, but our downfall was spending. It wasn't just the level of spending, but also the type of spending, namely earmarks.

Many argue that earmarks, when totaled, only account for a small percent of the federal budget.

That is true, but they leverage higher spending elsewhere else. If a Member has an earmark in a bill, he/she is obligated to support that bill no matter how bloated it becomes or how much it increases spending for a particular agency. We simply cannot allow this to go on.

Today,
Politico ran a piece on my most recent and ongoing efforts to eliminate the contemporary practice of earmarking.

Take a minute to read it if you can. If we Republicans expect voters to put us back in charge of the federal purse strings, eliminating earmarks seems like a logical first step in rebuilding their faith in our leadership.

Thanks again for all you do for me.

Best regards,

Jeff Flake

P.S. I am pleased to announce that the National Taxpayers Union just ranked me #1 in the Congress in for fiscal responsibility. I've been ranked #1 for a record eight straight years now. Once a cheapskate, always a cheapskate.
