Franks Signs Discharge Petition on Bill to Bring Transparency into Health Care Debate

January 14, 2009 - Congressman Trent Franks today released the following statement, after signing the discharge petition on H.Res. 847, the "Sunshine Resolution," which would require Democrats to provide public access to their closed-door health care negotiations:

"It was just over a year ago that President Obama campaigned on a promise of a 'new kind of politics' in Washington, D.C. Most
notably, the President stated at campaign stop after campaign stop that the negotiations over Democrats' proposed government takeover of health care would be televised on C-Span.

"But instead of transparency, Democrats have opted to engage in unprecedented, absurd political games, like literally locking Republicans out of a meeting room, while Democrats carried on health care discussions within.

"Democrats have also thus far ignored every request from the American people, from fellow Members of Congress, and from the CEO of C-Span to open up the negotiations over their government takeover of health care to the public, as they promised to do. This resolution would force them to finally live up to their word."

Congressman Franks is serving his fourth term in the U.S. House of Representatives, and is a member of the Committee on Armed Services, Strategic Forces Subcommittee, Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee, Military Readiness Subcommittee, Committee on the Judiciary, Constitution Subcommittee, and is Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law.
