Franks Announces Acquisition of Grant for Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge Project
Colorado River Bridge Aims to Alleviate Ongoing Security Concerns Regarding Traffic Near Hoover Dam
January 13, 2010 - Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) today announced the acquisition of an important federal grant in the amount of $5,958,712, which will be used to fund continued work on the Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge Project.
"Because of fears that the highway might be used to facilitate a terror attack on the Hoover Dam, the current stretch of Highway 93 that passes over the dam is the only major American highway that is still
restricted due to post-9/11 security concerns.
"Furthermore, the stretch of Highway 93 surrounding the Hoover Dam claims numerous lives as a result of car accidents every year, with travelers dying far more frequently near the dam than on other stretches of the very same highway.
"By providing an alternate, safer route, the Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge will save lives, while also addressing the congestion issues that have arisen as a result of the security restrictions near the Hoover Dam. This nearly $6 million grant brings us one step closer to seeing this vital project completed— a goal I have considered a high priority since coming to Congress in 2003."
Congressman Franks is serving his fourth term in the U.S. House of Representatives, and is a member of the Committee on Armed Services, Strategic Forces Subcommittee, Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee, Military Readiness Subcommittee, Committee on the Judiciary, Constitution Subcommittee, and is Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law.
