A new statewide poll by a Virginia-based Republican polling firm gives Sen. John McCain a 20-point lead over possible primary challenger J.D. Hayworth.

And after "likely" GOP voters hear negative information about Hayworth's 1995 to 2007 tenure in Congress, McCain's lead widens to 33 percentage points, according to the Dec. 8-10 Tarrance Group poll of 600 likely Arizona Republican primary voters . The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.

"Voters were read informational questions about J.D. Hayworth from publicly available information regarding the management of his political action committee, his dealings with convicted felon Jack Abramoff and press criticism about his demeanor as a Member of Congress," according to a memorandum that announced the poll's
findings.
