SEN. JOHN McCAIN - HEALTHCARE REFORM

Health care accounts for nearly one-sixth of our nation’s economy and affects every family and every household budget. In the name of “Reform,” however, it would be a tragic mistake to turn health care decisions over to the government.

Reform must focus on fundamental changes to the system to reduce costs and to increase access to affordable coverage and innovative care. Coverage options available to families should be more flexible and doctors must be protected from frivolous lawsuit. Malpractice reform has already been implemented in California and Texas, with dramatic decreases in the cost of medical insurance. We should apply those reforms to the rest of the nation.

Legislation currently pending in the Senate fails to accomplish any of these reforms. It would turn control of all health care over to the government’ would increase the cost of health care by $ 1.5 Trillion; and would still leave millions without coverage. It would cost jobs, drive small businesses out of business and drastically delay our economic recovery. It would also, despite what the Democrats claim, reduce Medicare benefits.

Senator McCain supports genuine health care reform – the kind of reform that preserves the high quality of care the American people currently enjoy, while reducing the escalating costs. The President said that he will not sign a health care bill that increases the deficit. The current legislation will. Senator McCain intends to hold this administration to that promise.
