Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer to receive 2009 John F. Long Lifetime Achievement Award from the Phoenix Business Journal

Despite a nail-biting legislative session and the ongoing budget morass, Gov. Jan Brewer has something to smile about.
She has been selected to receive 2009 John. F. Long Lifetime Achievement Award at Westmarc’s 17th annual Best of the West Awards, to be held Nov. 5 at the Renaissance Glendale Hotel & Spa.

The award honors a person, organization or business entity that has exemplified outstanding service by contributing to the lifestyle of western Maricopa County. Westmarc is a regional coalition of business, government and education leaders that promotes the West Valley and advocates on its behalf.

“Gov. Brewer has an incredible legacy of leadership and service to the state of Arizona,” Westmarc President and CEO Jack Lunsford said in a prepared statement. “Westmarc and the John F. Long family are proud to add the governor’s name to its list of past distinguished recipients who have given so much for the West Valley.”

In Brewer’s first term in the state Legislature, she was a key part of the West Valley legislative coalition that fought for passage of legislation establishing Arizona State University West. While serving on the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors, she negotiated large land and conservation deals that added thousands of acres to county parks, particularly White Tanks Regional Park.

Former Arizona Sen. Pat Wright said freshman legislators were always cautious, but Brewer was willing to fight the establishment for the creation of ASU West.

“Gov. Brewer exemplifies the leadership and commitment to the West Valley of Mr. Long himself,” said Westmarc Chairman Mike Woodard. “She is most deserving of Westmarc’s highest honor.”

Among the past recipients of the award are U.S. Rep. Bob Stump, the West Valley Mayoral Leadership Coalition for Transportation (Proposition 400), and Phoenix International Raceway.
