FIRST 100 DAYS: AMID RISING UNEMPLOYMENT, BIDEN'S JOB CLAIM DEBUNKED BY EXPERTS
VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN TODAY: "100 Days Ago ... I Stated That We Had Saved Or Created 150,000 Jobs In The First 100 Days." (Vice President Joe Biden, Remarks On American Recovery And Reinvestment Act At Brookings Institution, Washington, DC, 9/3/09)
But In First 100 Days Of Stimulus, America Lost Over 1,547,000 Jobs. (U.S. Labor of Bureau Statistics,www.bls.gov, Accessed 9/3/09)
No Wonder Experts Debunked Biden's Claim:
Bureau Of Labor Statistics Commissioner Says Administration's Job Calculations "Very Difficult" To "Substantiate." REP. KEVIN BRADY (R-TX): "The administration, including the vice president, has claimed that stimulus policies have added 150,000 new jobs to the level of employment. We see this cited almost daily by the administration. Can you substantiate that claim?" KEITH HALL: "No. That would be a very difficult thing for anybody to substantiate." BRADY: "And the chairman -- who's a highly respected chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, Chairman Romer -- also cited that 150,000 job-creation figure in a recent testimony before this committee. You're saying you can't verify that the administration's policies have created those additional 150,000 jobs." HALL: "No. We're busy just counting jobs." (U.S. House Of Representatives, Joint Economic Committee, Hearing, 6/5/09)
Associated Press: Administration's Jobs Claim "So Murky It Can Never Be Verified." "Obama faces souring public opinion over his handling of the economy, which has shed 1.6 million jobs since the stimulus was signed in February. That total has far overshadowed White House announcements estimating the effort has saved 150,000 jobs, a figure that is so murky it can never be verified." (Brett J. Blackledge & Matt Apuzzo, "Spin Meter: Obama's New 'Accelerated' Recovery Plan Is Neither New Nor Accelerated," The Associated Press, 6/9/09)
CBS News: Administration's Jobs Figure Impossible To Verify. WYATT ANDREWS: "[H]ere's the reality: those 150,000 jobs are a guess ..." MAYA MACGUINEAS: "There's no way that an economist no matter how good can say, 'this stimulus package created this many jobs.' It's just a jump that you can't make with any certainty ... It would be absolutely impossible to measure with any precision how many people have kept their jobs." (CBS Evening News, 6/11/09)
SECOND 100 DAYS: BIDEN DOUBLES DOWN ON BASELESS JOB CLAIM DESPITE JOB LOSSES
BIDEN TODAY: "Over The Objection Of Some Of My More Cautious Advisers, I Went On To Say That We Will Create Another 600,000 Jobs In The Second Hundred Days." (Vice President Joe Biden, Remarks On American Recovery And Reinvestment Act At Brookings Institution, Washington, DC, 9/3/09)
But In Just The Two Months Of Second 100 Days, Since Stimulus Bill Was Signed, America Lost Over 700,000 Jobs. (U.S. Labor of Bureau Statistics, www.bls.gov, Accessed 9/3/09)
And In Last Month Of Second 100 Days, Another 200,000+ Jobs Expected To Be Lost. "Economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires expect the BLS will report August job cuts totaling 233,000." (Katheleen Madigan, "Economy Sheds 298,000 Private-Sector Jobs, ADP Says," The Wall Street Journal, 9/2/09)
