A major newspaper asked top politicians, government officials and commentators to detail in four hundred words their "hope" for the Obama administration.
...Of course I wasn't one of the people asked but when has that stopped me from opining. I guess I could give the same answer Rush Limbaugh offered. "I don't need 400 words. I only need four. I hope he fails." However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that I, in fact do have some hopes for the Obama administration.
I hope he carries on what President Bush started and supports two new fledgling democracies in the Middle East.
I hope he can keep the US safe from terrorist attacks for the next four years.
I hope he does go through the budget, program by program, line by line and either eliminates are at least greatly reduces wasteful and inefficient programs.
I hope he can keep his "no pork" pledge for the "economic stimulus" bill if there is going to be one. Heck, why stop there. I hope he ends pork barrel spending in ALL appropriation bills.
I hope he does provide meaningful tax relief with permanent rate cuts, not rebate gimmicks.
I hope he sees the light and realizes that we cannot borrow and spend our way to prosperity. The past years should have shown him that.
I hope he realizes that the same economists who today are saying that we need a massive stimulus package are the same economists who never saw our current economic troubles coming in the first place.
I hope he realizes that there is no end game, no exit strategy for government programs and subsidies. As President Reagan said "The closest thing to eternal life is a government program." When the time comes to end the temporary subsidies in the economic stimulus package, there will be a chorus of voices, both from those who receive the money and more loudly from legislators who maintain power by spending it, that it is too soon or that cutting this program or that "will hurt most those that can afford it least."
I hope if he doubts me, he will look at the Rural Electrification Program, 75 years and counting, Rent Control, 67 years and counting or Farm Subsidies where last year Congress doled out $350 billion dollars when crop prices were at an all time high.
I hope he remembers that just because one can do something does not mean that one ought to do something.
In short, I Hope he Changes.
Yes I have Hope. I am just not holding my breath.
Oh and I hope it only lasts four years.
If you have some of the same hopes, I err, hope you will join us at Let's Get This Right Radio for our upcoming shows with Congressman Mike Rogers (R-AL 3rd), Michael Johns, Healthcare Executive, Conservative Commentator and former White House Staffer, and Meghan McCain.
