Sen. McCain made major gains in the past week, with a strong debate performance and the emergence of Joe the Plumber and his brand of populist, blue-collar opposition to Sen. Obama's tax proposals — and Obama's ideas of "spreading the wealth around."
States that should have been definite for McCain but were on the verge of straying — Texas, Indiana, South Carolina, Georgia, and Kentucky — returned to the McCain column.
Obama continues to have an overall lead of 5 points in the polling average and, as a result, states that should be Republican — including Louisiana, Arizona, Tennessee, West Virginia, and North Carolina — can be rated as no better than tossups.
Ohio, Florida, and Nevada — the real tossup states that would be in play if the presidential contest were a dead heat — are still safely tucked away in the Obama column.
