September 11, 2008 from TIM BEE

On this day, we remember the men and women that lost their lives on September 11th and the heroes that arose from the ashes of those horrifying terrorist attacks.

Everyone remembers where they were that Tuesday morning; most of us hearing the news on the radio or watching television. We were all shaken by the events that took place. To this day, the reports of the carnage are still imbedded in our minds and at the time there was nothing we could do except to hold our children, comfort our families and pray for those suffering in the midst of chaos.

We could only imagine how those across the country were faring.

2,500 miles away, in New York City, things were much different than the rest of the country. The first responders that had signed up to be heroes met their calling. While workers in the twin towers that didn’t sign up to be heroes received that same call.

That terrible day brought out the best in America.

That day, ordinary every-day people joined those that had chosen service to others above their own safety.

They joined the calling of a hero.

We’ve all heard the stories of unbelievable courage and sacrifice.

Ordinary men and women that gave all for others, often complete
strangers. An estimated 17,000 people are believed to have been in the twin towers at the time of the attack. Over 400 firefighters, police officers, paramedics and EMTs gave their lives saving thousands. They saved nearly 15 thousand lives that day.

In Arlington Virginia, the Pentagon was hit by a Boeing 757, disintegrating on impact. Those on Flight 93 learned about the carnage through their final cell phone calls to their loved ones and knew they’d have to take actions into their own hands.

They did. They attempted to storm the cabin and official reports state that the terrorists gave up on their plans to crash the plane into either the U.S. Capitol Building or the White House and rolled the plane into the rural Pennsylvania countryside.

Not only was this an attack on our people; it was an attack on our nation’s soul; it was a test of our nation’s character. Our collective soul mourned, then recovered… and will never forget.

That day, America found out what it was made of…heroes.

Our nation’s character met the test and exceeded expectations.

Our servicemen and women are shining examples of heroes. American forces are the envy of the world and they are all volunteers. These men and women sacrifice every day for our country. They put country first. They are heroes. They swore to protect and uphold the constitution of the United States of America with every fiber of their being. These servicemen and women go into harm’s way for us. They’re heroes.

Their families sacrifice for us; their spouses, their children. They are heroes.

We can look to our heroes of September 11th, our firefighters, our police, our first responders, our servicemen and women to inspire us to serve today.

We look back at September 11th and see a nation that was knocked down for a brief unforgettable moment.

That terrible day that began with evil intentions was overcome by the greatness of this nation.

That day became one of America’s finest moments.

That day, the world found out what America is made of...heroes.

Sincerely,
