WASHINGTON, June 6 (UPI) -- At least $21.5 million poured into Sen. John McCain's campaign coffers in May, its best fundraising month yet, his advisers said.
McCain's campaign raised funds in concert with the Republican National Committee for a combined $45 million, The New York Times reported Friday.
May's total left the campaign with $31.5 million in the bank and the RNC with $53.6 million, much of which can be used to help McCain battle presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.
The Arizona Republican's campaign has struggled to raise funds during much of the primary, while Obama's fundraising prowess during the primary is well known. Obama's campaign has not released its May fundraising figures.
After McCain became the presumptive Republican nominee, his campaign began raising money in in tandem with the RNC and several state parties, allowing some donors to contribute as much $70,000 with the money being divided among the campaign and the party organizations, the Times reported.
