WASHINGTON – RNC Chairman Robert M. “Mike” Duncan released the following statement today:
“Last week, we learned that Barack Obama’s claim to represent a new brand of politics that rejects negative and personal attacks did not apply to a disgraceful smear leveled against John McCain by his party’s national chairman, Howard Dean.
“Now again, Senator Obama has failed to stand up and renounce a vicious attack on the integrity and character of John McCain.
“Last night, according to the Grand Forks Herald, Obama’s warm up act, Ed Schultz, called Senator McCain a ‘warmonger’ - just days after Senator McCain delivered a speech to the nation addressing his well-informed views on the depravity of war. According to the news report, Obama thanked Schultz for his comments.
“Enough is enough. Senator Obama has an obligation to speak
out and publicly reject and denounce - not applaud - the shameful and
contemptible remarks made by his surrogates, whether it is the party chairman or
a liberal radio show host.
“I would remind Senator Obama that John McCain has not hesitated to come forward and speak out when he has felt someone’s character and honor has been challenged.
“Barack Obama has an absolute responsibility to denounce this reprehensible smear against John McCain. If not, his rhetoric will be proven yet again to be nothing more than empty words.”
John McCain: “I detest war. It might not be the worst thing to befall human beings, but it is wretched beyond all description. When nations seek to resolve their differences by force of arms, a million tragedies ensue. The lives of a nation's finest patriots are sacrificed. Innocent people suffer and die. Commerce is disrupted; economies are damaged; strategic interests shielded by years of patient statecraft are endangered as the exigencies of war and diplomacy conflict. Not the valor with which it is fought nor the nobility of the cause it serves, can glorify war. Whatever gains are secured, it is loss the veteran remembers most keenly. Only a fool or a fraud sentimentalizes the merciless reality of war. However heady the appeal of a call to arms, however just the cause, we should still shed a tear for all that is lost when war claims its wages from us.” (John McCain, Remarks To World Affairs Council, Los Angeles, CA, 3/26/08)
