Gabby votes with liberals, trial lawyers over national security
TUCSON, AZ – Negotiations between and House and Senate Democrats could produce a bill that would be sent to President Bush as early as next week on the issue of extending and modernizing federal laws on monitoring terrorists’ conversations, but Gabby Giffords’ previous votes on the subject indicate she’ll side with liberal Democrats.
According to a report in The Washington Post, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer is attempting to broker a deal between his caucus’ liberal and moderate wings over the issue of whether to shield telecom firms that cooperate with the Department of Justice from lawsuits, with the “liberal camp pushing to do nothing and the moderate wing supporting a provision in Senate-passed legislation granting immunity for the telecommunications industry.” [“Wiretap Compromise in Works,” Washington Post,” March 4, 2008.]
In February Giffords voted on three occasions to oppose the Senate version that strengthens the monitoring law and gives the telecom firms the lawsuit protection needed to prevent a trial lawyer feeding frenzy. (Roll Call votes 53, 54 and 73).
A bipartisan Senate majority passed a version of the bill last month, 68-29. [Roll Call here.]
The American Association for Justice, the PAC for the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, has given Giffords $5,000 this election cycle and $10,000 last election cycle.

“Gabby Giffords’ voting record on terrorist monitoring places her
solidly in the liberal camp of her party,” Pima County Republican Party Chair
Judi White said. “Gabby might claim to be a moderate, but a look at her
record on national security tells a different story.”

“With the likes al Qaeda making clear that they’ll stop at nothing
to carry out their evil agenda, law enforcement needs all the tools at their
disposal to monitor terrorist communications,” White said. “When given a
choice to stand strong for national security or trial lawyers, Gabby Giffords
stood up for the lawyers. Voters will remember that in
November.”
