Ankle Biting Pundits Blog: Bumiller Attempts To Distance Self From Unprofessional Behavior By Patrick Hynes

New York Times reporter Elisabeth Bumiller refers to herself in the third person in this account of her unprofessional badgering of my client Sen. John McCain about Sen. John Kerry’s futile entreaties to McCain forces to join the Democratic ticket in 2004. “Later, when Mr. McCain was asked by a reporter from The [sic] New York Times about the conversation …” writes Bumiller, in a bizarre effort to extricate herself from the story.

I can’t blame her for wanting to disavow her unbecoming behavior. John Hinderaker from Powerline calls the premise of her line of questioning
“false.” Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey observes, “Interestingly, the Times now has tried twice to get his goat, and for the second time, they’ve wound up with egg on their face.”

Other
bloggers were unimpressed with her behavior, as well.

I invited Ms. Bumiller onto my radio program to explain her actions and to find out if frustration over her paper’s
remarkable decline in public credibility has contributed to her partisan-sounding bitterness, but she, like her colleagues who authored an execrable smear of Sen. McCain a few weeks ago, seems uninterested in journalistic accountability.

The open invitation still stands—If any editors or reporters from the Times have any interest at all in defending the integrity of their once great publication, you are welcome to join us on
“Meet the New Press.” A word of warning, however: The further your credibility sinks, the longer the list of questions becomes.

What Other Bloggers are Saying?

NRO’s JIM GERAGHTY: “
This is supposed to be John McCain losing his temper? Come on. It's a bit brusque, or a little gruff, but this is light years away from the explosive rage it's being touted as. … Whoever thinks that back-and-forth shows a man "snapping" has never cut me off in traffic.” http://campaignspot.nationalreview.com/post/?q=ZDBkZDI4ODdmMzZhNzg3Y2QyODE0MjlkYzMyYmYzZjE=

TOWNHALL.COM’S MATT LEWIS: “... Seriously, can you blame McCain for not having a lot of patience with the NYT?”

ANN ALTHOUSE: “Maybe a better question is what sort of person views that as ‘flipping out’?”

GLENN REYNOLDS: “The press hates it when pols get mad at reporters. I'm not convinced that anyone else does.”

HOT AIR: But his reaction seems rather mild, under the circumstances. He’s annoyed, sure, but hardly spitting and cursing. By the time she asks “Why are you so angry?”, the question is so inappropriate that he asks her to repeat it — and she declines, hopefully out of embarrassment.
