McCain Beats Clinton By 6 Points - Commentary from BRAD MARSTON -

There is an excellent post by Joe Gandelman, Editor-in-Chief at The Moderate Voice A new Rasmussen poll provides double-barreled good news for Republican Senator John McCain: it shows him greatly widening his lead over Democratic Senator Hillary Clinton if the two face each other in Election 2008 — and that McCain is widely perceived as a centrist to the right of Clinton. …

Another good piece of news for McCain: according to Rasmussen, the Arizona Senator is viewed more favorably now than any other candidate running for President in either party. That’s the most positive rating of any Presidential candidate in either party (see ratings and other key stats for all Republican and Democratic candidates).

McCain also has the lowest level of core opposition among the leading candidates—just 33% of voters say they will definitely vote against him if he is on the ballot. As noted in a recent analysis, it’s a good time to be John McCain, He has increased his support in Iowa and is within a few points of the lead in New Hampshire.

A note from Brad, I have long maintained that McCain will win visa vis the Republican nomination and of course electability is a factor in that. The Republican base is not as motivated as the democrats and nothing will motivate them more than keeping Hillary out of the White House. (Which is why we should not be hoping for an Obama upset in Iowa or NH.)

The poll numbers for McCain, nationally and in Iowa and New Hampshire, or at least the reporting on them, is a double edged sword. It is great news and great to see but it also raises expectations for McCain.

If he finishes 3rd in Iowa it will obviously be a great result considering he hasn't really campaigned there much. However because of the caucus system, polling in Iowa is notoriously innacurate. If he finishes 4th or 5th after all the recent good news it will take away a lot of the momentum McCain has built up recently.

That will also make New Hampshire that much more important to the McCain Campaign. The recent poll numbers have made New Hampshire even more of a MUST WIN for McCain.

Without a win I don't think McCain attracts the financial resources to compete nationally for Super Duper Tuesday.
