Do-Nothing Harry Misses Target Adjournment,
Allows Veterans Bill to Languish for 133 Days

TEMPE, AZ – Tomorrow, October 26, is supposed to be the day that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and her close ally Harry Mitchell put the finishing touches on their first session at the helm of the House of Representatives. Instead, it’s just another day on a calendar lacking in accomplishments.

“What has Harry been doing back there? Tomorrow marks the day that
Congress was supposed to adjourn with all of their work complete, yet Harry
Mitchell and this do-nothing Congress has not passed even one of the twelve
spending bills needed to keep the government operating,”
said Congressional District Five candidate Laura Knaperek.

Worse yet is how Harry Mitchell, himself a member of the Veteran’s Affairs Committee, has refused to take any action on the Veteran’s spending bill (H.R. 2642). Even though the bill passed the House 133 days ago with wide bipartisan support, the Democrats refuse to move the bill to the President for signature.

Veteran’s groups are equally outraged: “I don’t know if I’d say we feel betrayed, but it’s politics as usual, and we’re caught in the middle” said Joe Violante, Disabled American Veterans legislative director. (CQ Today, September 29, 2007)

The bill provides more than $37 billion for veterans programs.
$600 million for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) care, traumatic brain injury research and care;
$4.1 billion to improve VA facilities, hospitals and clinics;
$2.9 billion for mental health care and substance abuse treatment for veterans; and
$480 million for prosthetic research to help wounded veterans retain a positive quality of life.

“Harry, it’s about time you do the right thing. Stop the political games and
protect our veterans, or stand aside and let others do the job you can’t seem to
do,”
concluded Knaperek.
