John McCain Tells Newsmax: Crime, Drugs Sparked Arizona Law; Declares Bipartisanship Dead in Washington By: Jim Meyers

Thursday, 29 Apr 2010 07:00 PM

Sen. John McCain tells Newsmax that drug cartels and human traffickers have taken over Mexico and pose a direct threat to the security of the United States.

The Arizona Republican and 2008 presidential candidate also says bipartisanship is dead in this Congress as Democrats are intent on ramming through a left-wing agenda . . . asserts that the Obama administration has demonstrated a “fundamental misreading” of Iran and its nuclear ambitions . . . and warns that Americans will likely face a “dramatic” increase in taxes.

In an exclusive interview with Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy for Newsmax.tv, McCain explains his support for the tough new immigration law recently signed by Gov. Jan Brewer in his border state.

“I think the legislation is clearly a reaction to the federal government’s failure to carry out its responsibilities and secure our borders,” he says.

Franks: AZ Immigration Bill Necessary Because Federal Government Hasn't Done Its Job

In Case You Missed It: Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) today appeared on Fox News’ America’s Newsroom to discuss Arizona's new immigration bill (SB1070) and threats of lawsuits and boycotts of Arizona by other states and organizations -- a result of efforts by the left to derail the legislation “based on a complete mischaracterization of the bill.” Franks pointed out that the passage of the Arizona immigration bill was only necessary because the federal government has for so long failed to do its job of controlling illegal immigration to Arizona and other border states.

Franks Chosen for House Republican National Security Solutions Group

April 29, 2010 - Following today's announcement that Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02) is among the Representatives chosen by House Republican Leader John Boehner (OH-08) for the newly-formed House Republican National Security Solutions Group, Franks released the following statement:

"The most fundamental responsibility of our government is to defend Americans from those who would seek to do them harm. The founding of our nation was predicated on the belief that we are beneficiaries of the God-given rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I take the responsibility of defending those rights very seriously, which is why I am deeply honored to be selected as a member of the House Republican National Security Solutions Group.

"Unfortunately, the current Administration has enacted policies that embolden our enemies and alienate and endanger many of America’s most-cherished allies. The new National Security Solutions Group will be at the forefront of efforts in the House of Representatives to come up with better solutions to the most pressing security issues facing our nation, so that we might fulfill our sacred Constitutional duty of representing Americans and constantly keeping the defense of the American homeland as our top priority."

Congressman Franks is serving his fourth term in the U.S. House of Representatives, and is a member of the Committee on Armed Services, Strategic Forces Subcommittee, Oversight & Investigations Subcommittee, Military Readiness Subcommittee, Committee on the Judiciary, Constitution Subcommittee, and is Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law.

McCAIN CAMPAIGN RELEASES NEW WEB VIDEO, “BORDER SECURITY”

PHOENIX, AZ -- U.S. Senator John McCain’s re-election campaign today released a new web video, called “Border Security,” highlighting the McCain-Kyl Border Security Action Plan.

The web video features Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu, who strongly backs the McCain-Kyl plan, saying, “They key point of
Senator McCain’s plan is to secure the border ... This is going to work, and this is what we actually need.”

Watch new web video here

McCain-Kyl Border Security Action Plan:

1.) Immediately deploy 3,000 National Guard Troops along the Arizona/Mexico border, along with appropriate surveillance platforms, which shall remain in place until the Governor of Arizona certifies, after consulting with state, local and tribal law enforcement, that the Federal Government has achieved operational control of the border. Permanently add 3,000 Custom and Border Protection Agents to the Arizona/Mexico border by 2015.

2.) Fully fund and support Operation Streamline in Arizona’s two Border Patrol Sectors to, at a minimum, ensure that repeat illegal border crossers go to jail for 15 to 60 days. Where Operation Streamline has been implemented, the number of illegal crossings has decreased significantly. Require the Obama Administration to complete a required report detailing the justice and enforcement resources needed to fully fund this program. Fully reimburse localities for any related detention costs.

3.) Provide $100M, an increase of $40M, for Operation Stonegarden, a program that provides grants and reimbursement to Arizona’s border law enforcement for additional personnel, overtime, travel and other related costs related to illegal immigration and drug smuggling along the border.

4.) Offer Hardship Duty Pay to Border Patrol Agents assigned to rural, high-trafficked areas, such as the CBP Willcox and Douglas Stations in the Tucson Sector

5.) Complete the 700 miles of fencing along the border with Mexico and construct double- and triple- layer fencing at appropriate locations along the Arizona-Mexico border.

6.) Substantially increase the 25 mobile surveillance systems and three Predator B Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in place today along the Arizona/Mexico border and ensure the border patrol has the resources necessary to operate the UAVs 24 hours a day seven days a week. Send additional fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters to the Arizona-Mexico Border.

7.) Increase funding for vital radio communications and interoperability between CBP and state, local, and tribal law enforcement to assist in apprehensions along the border.

8.) Provide funding for additional Border Patrol stations in the Tucson Sector and explore the possibility of an additional Border Patrol sector for Arizona. Create six additional permanent Border Patrol Forward Operating Bases, and provide funding to upgrade the existing bases to include modular buildings, electricity and potable water. Complete construction of the planned permanent checkpoint in Arizona. Deploy additional temporary roving checkpoints and increase horse patrols throughout the Tucson Sector.

9.) Require the Federal government to fully reimburse state and local governments for the costs of incarcerating criminal aliens. Start by at least funding the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP) at its authorized level of $950 million.

10.) Place one full-time Federal Magistrate in Cochise County and provide full funding for and authorization of the Southwest Border Prosecution Initiative to reimburse state, county, tribal, and municipal governments for costs associated with the prosecution and pre-trial detention of federally-initiated criminal cases declined by local offices of the United States Attorneys.

Tom Horne lays out priorities as he seeks Attorney General’s office By Bill Hess

04/28/2010

SIERRA VISTA — At Tuesday’s lunch meeting of the Thunder Mountain Republican Women held at the Pueblo del Sol Club, the attendees heard from Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Horne, who is campaigning to become the state’s Attorney General.

Saying he will bring his conservative values as the state’s top educator into Arizona’s highest law enforcement office if elected in November, Horne said he won an important education case for states’ rights in the U.S. Supreme Court concerning bilingual education.

Noting the Democratic leadership of the state — governor and attorney general — refused to take on the issue which he believed violated the U.S. Constitution in the arena of separation of powers when it came to teaching English to non-English learners in
a special and expensive way, Horne said the nation’s highest court ruled 5-4 in his favor, which meant he saved Arizona $300 million.

And, it was his attorney background which helped, he added.

As attorney general, he said one of the responsibilities of the office is “to do what you can do to save taxpayer dollars.”

Seeking the state’s top law enforcement office means he will have three priorities.

The first will be to strictly enforce the laws; second, to protect the border — he supports the recently signed immigration bill approved by Republican Gov. Jan Brewer; and third, to improve the legal environment to support business growth.

As for the tough immigration bill signed by the governor, Horne said as attorney general he would ensure people’s rights are protected but he would also use to law to go after sanctuary communities like Flagstaff.

He also would have supported the governor’s call to fight the federal health care law as being unconstitutional, something Democrat Terry Goddard — who is running for governor this year — refused to do, leading Brewer to seek outside legal support to join other states in fighting the law.

Second complaint targets Andrew Thomas by Michael Kiefer The Arizona Republic

Apr. 28, 2010

An association of criminal-defense attorneys filed a complaint with the State Bar of Arizona against Andrew Thomas, claiming the former Maricopa County attorney engaged in unethical behavior.

Arizona Attorneys for Criminal Justice, an organization with nearly 400 members, asked the state Bar, which licenses and disciplines attorneys in Arizona, to petition the state Supreme Court to suspend Thomas from practicing law.

The Bar already is reviewing a complaint filed in March against Thomas after a Superior Court judge found he may have acted unethically in prosecuting county Supervisor Mary Rose Wilcox.

The new Bar complaint filed Monday chronicles events from the past two years, including Thomas' prosecution of two county supervisors and a Superior Court judge, actions taken against other judges and their staffs, and a contempt of court citation filed against a sheriff's detention officer. Some actions are cited for which Thomas already has been investigated and cleared by the Bar.

Thomas resigned as county attorney to run for Arizona attorney general.

Obama Goes on the Personal Attack

President Obama's strategy gets personal
By JONATHAN ALLEN & CAROL E. LEE, Politico

Mitch McConnell is in bed with Wall Street “movers and shakers” — and is fronting “cynical and deceptive” arguments on their behalf.

John Boehner is a health care Chicken Little to be mocked for predicting Armageddon if the Democrats’ reform bill passed. Sarah Palin can be ignored on arms control because she’s “not exactly an expert on nuclear issues.”

And Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh are just a “troublesome” twosome spreading “vitriol.”

Democratic oppo research? Comments from Daily Kos?

No, this is your president speaking. Once chastised for not being tough enough, President Barack Obama has lately been getting personal with his political adversaries — singling them out for scorn in speeches, interviews, asides and even in his weekly radio
address.

Rather than just going after big groups of bad guys — insurance companies, lobbyists, the media — Obama has adopted a strategy that gives a face to the enemy.

Another Poll Puts McCain Over Hayworth By 26 Points By Dan Nowicki

The Arizona Republic (Blog)
April 28, 2010

A new poll from Phoenix-based Behavior Research Center shows Sen. John McCain with a commanding lead over former Rep. J.D. Hayworth in Arizona's closely watched Senate primary fight.

Polls in this slugfest have been all over the place, making it hard to get a bead on where the race stands. And this poll is unlikely to change perceptions dramatically. But unlike some of the other polls, the statewide survey of 666 Arizona voters conducted between April 12 and April 25 includes Republicans and GOP-leaning independents who indicated they intend to participate in the Aug. 24 Republican primary.

Of those primary voters, McCain leads Hayworth 54 percent to 28 percent with another 18 percent undecided.

In a potential general election battle against former Tucson Vice Mayor Rodney Glassman, the leading Democratic Senate candidate, McCain is ahead 46 percent to 24 percent with a significant 30 percent "uncommitted," the poll says.

Hayworth also leads Glassman, who is not very well-known around the state yet, by 37 percent to 30 percent with 33 percent "uncommitted."

The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 5.3 percent.

GOV. JAN BREWER GETS BOUNCE IN THE POLLS FOR SIGNING SB1070!

Election 2010: Arizona Governor
Poll Bounce for Arizona Governor After Signing Immigration Law

Last week, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed an immigration law that launched a national debate. It has also at least temporarily helped her own chances of remaining Arizona’s governor.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of likely voters in the state shows that 56% now approve of the way Brewer is performing her role as governor.

Two weeks ago
, just 40% offered their approval.

The new figure includes 22% who Strongly Approve of the governor’s performance. That’s up from five percent (5%) before Brewer signed the law that authorizes local police to stop and verify the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant.

The bounce in the polls is also evident in new numbers on the November election. If Brewer is the Republican nominee, she would get 48% of the vote while her likely Democratic opponent, State Attorney General Terry Goddard, would attract 40%. Two weeks
ago, it was Brewer 44% and Goddard 40%. Goddard is an outspoken opponent of the new law.

As with all poll bounces, it remains to be seen whether this is a temporary spike in support for the governor or if it signifies a lasting change in the race.

While most Arizona voters favor a welcoming immigration policy, 64% support the new immigration law.
This is the second big issue in two months to boost Brewer’s prospects for being elected to her own full-term in office. In March, Brewer trailed Goddard by nine percentage points. Then, after passage of the federal health care law, Goddard refused to file a lawsuit against the federal government challenging the constitutionality of the law. Brewer found a way around that objection, and Arizona joined other states in the legal challenge. After that, Brewer’s numbers improved to a slight advantage over Goddard.

Brewer became governor when Janet Napolitano moved to Washington to be secretary of Homeland Security. She initially ran into trouble with Republicans statewide by supporting a tax hike to help balance the state budget.

Following the health care action, Brewer’s numbers also improved in the Republican Primary campaign.

The latest polling did not ask about the Republican Primary. However, it is worth noting that 81% of Republicans now approve of Brewer’s performance.
That’s up from 52% before signing the immigration law. Those figures include 31% of Republicans who now Strongly Approve, up from seven percent (7%) before the immigration law was signed.

Sens. McCain & Kyl 10-point plan to secure our border

The security situation along the Arizona-Mexico border is out of control. For years, I have demanded the Federal government do everything in its power to curb the violence spilling over from Mexico, and protect our citizens from the hardened criminals and drug smugglers that are coming across our border.

Sadly, despite my repeated calls for action, Washington has failed to respond.

But Arizonans know that we can’t wait any longer, and it’s time to increase the pressure on the Congressional liberals and Washington bureaucrats who are shirking their constitutional responsibility to keep America safe.

That’s why Senator Jon Kyl and I have proposed a comprehensive 10-point plan to secure our southern border.

The first step in our plan is the immediate deployment of 3,000 National Guard troops, and the simultaneous hiring and training of an additional 3,000 Customs and Border Protection Agents to be permanently stationed in the region.

Senator Kyl and I also believe that the Federal government must complete the 700 miles of fencing along the border, including the construction of double- and triple- layer fencing in appropriate areas.

The McCain/Kyl border security plan is supported by top Arizona law enforcement officials, including Pinal County Sherriff Paul Babeu and Cochise County Sherriff Larry Dever.

Recently, we’ve heard that the Obama Administration, in an attempt to play election year politics with border security, has floated the idea of moving forward on comprehensive immigration reform legislation.

While it is true that some industries in Arizona continue to struggle without a temporary worker program, I strongly believe that it would be irresponsible for Congress to address immigration reform while the security situation along our border continues to deteriorate.

Let me be clear: I am categorically opposed to amnesty for those who have entered our country illegally, and we must secure our border.

As Arizona’s senior senator, I will do everything I can to ensure the federal government fulfills its constitutional responsibility to secure our border.

Read the full 10 point plan that Senator Kyl and I have proposed below:

Senators McCain and Kyl’s Ten Point Border Security Action Plan

  • 1. Immediately deploy 3,000 National Guard Troops along the Arizona/Mexico border, along with appropriate surveillance platforms, which shall remain in place until the Governor of Arizona certifies, after consulting with state, local and tribal law enforcement, that the Federal Government has achieved operational control of the border. Permanently add 3,000 Custom and Border Protection Agents to the Arizona/Mexico border by 2015.

  • 2. Fully fund and support Operation Streamline in Arizona’s two Border Patrol Sectors to, at a minimum, ensure that repeat illegal border crossers go to jail for 15 to 60 days. Where Operation Streamline has been implemented, the number of illegal crossings has decreased significantly. Require the Obama Administration to complete a required report detailing the justice and enforcement resources needed to fully fund this program. Fully reimburse localities for any related detention costs.

  • 3. Provide $100M, an increase of $40M, for Operation Stonegarden, a program that provides grants and reimbursement to Arizona’s border law enforcement for additional personnel, overtime, travel and other related costs related to illegal immigration and drug smuggling along the border.

  • 4. Offer Hardship Duty Pay to Border Patrol Agents assigned to rural, high-trafficked areas, such as the CBP Willcox and Douglas Stations in the Tucson Sector.

  • 5. Complete the 700 miles of fencing along the border with Mexico and construct double- and triple- layer fencing at appropriate locations along the Arizona-Mexico border.

  • 6. Substantially increase the 25 mobile surveillance systems and three Predator B Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in place today along the Arizona/Mexico border and ensure the border patrol has the resources necessary to operate the UAVs 24 hours a day seven days a week.

  • 7. Send additional fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters to the Arizona-Mexico Border. Increase funding for vital radio communications and interoperability between CBP and state, local, and tribal law enforcement to assist in apprehensions along the border.

  • 8. Provide funding for additional Border Patrol stations in the Tucson Sector and explore the possibility of an additional Border Patrol sector for Arizona. Create six additional permanent Border Patrol Forward Operating Bases, and provide funding to upgrade the existing bases to include modular buildings, electricity and potable water. Complete construction of the planned permanent checkpoint in Arizona. Deploy additional temporary roving checkpoints and increase horse patrols throughout the Tucson Sector.

  • 9. Require the Federal government to fully reimburse state and local governments for the costs of incarcerating criminal aliens. Start by at least funding the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP) at its authorized level of $950 million.

  • 10. Place one full-time Federal Magistrate in Cochise County and provide full funding for and authorization of the Southwest Border Prosecution Initiative to reimburse state, county, tribal, and municipal governments for costs associated with the prosecution and pre-trial detention of federally-initiated criminal cases declined by local offices of the United States Attorneys.
