Obama 'Birther' Row Rears Its Head Again
- By: Greg Milam, US correspondent
Saturday February 27, 2010

One of the more bizarre rows in American politics has resurfaced as the country prepares for crucial mid-term elections this year.

The so-called 'birthers' movement, which questions whether Barack Obama was born in the US and is therefore a legitimate president, has cropped up on the campaign.

A representative in Arizona's state senate has even introduced a 'birth certificate bill' because she says constituents are so worried.

The White House has consistently dismissed the issue. Authorities in Hawaii have provided an electronic record of Obama's birth because the paper copy was destroyed in a fire which wiped out much of the state's archives.

But J D Hayworth, who is running against former presidential candidate John McCain in the race to be Arizona Senator, questioned Obama's credentials on a radio show.

McCain, who lost out to Obama in 2008, criticised Hayworth for giving oxygen to the 'birther' debate.

And supporters at one of Hayworth's rallies openly questioned the president's right to be in office.

Alan Becker said: "If it was in question and someone questioned me about my birth certificate I would give it to them and say 'Here it is'.

"Why can't he do that?

Democrats in Arizona have dismissed the bill, introduced by Representative Judy Burges.

Kyrsten Sinema said: "This bill is what I would call patently ridiculous and offensive.

"The truth is that he was born in the United States and has provided that proof time and time again."

The 'birthers' are perhaps the most bizarre of the protest movements against the president.

Genuine concerns in the US are often being drowned out by more extreme voices.

But Hayworth, who says the Obama issue is now settled, believes questions remain.

He said: "We require voters to demonstrate they are who they say they are, I think everyone on the ballot should do that."

HIT THE PHONES AND WRITE YOUR CHECKS TO STOP OBAMACARE By DICK MORRIS & EILEEN MCGANN

Published on DickMorris.com on February 26, 2010

Printer-Friendly Version

In the aftermath of his sham health care summit, President Obama has made clear his determination to proceed to try to jam through his radical legislation. There is no real chance to stop it in the Senate since he will use reconciliation to pass it.

But we can beat it in the House! Dozens of Congressmen who voted for the bill last time are re-thinking their support in view of the tidal wave of opposition.

And, since the bill passed by only 220-215, there is no Democratic margin for error. Each of us can act now to protect our healthcare:

1. Go to dickmorris.com and see a list of marginal Democrats who voted for healthcare last time. The list includes their local and Washington office phone numbers. Pick up the phone and call them. Even if you don't live in the district, call them. If you live in the same state, tell them. If not, call them anyway. Call your friends or family that might live in their states or even their districts (the list on our web site says where their district is located) and ask them to call the Congressmen. Keep those lines busy all weekend!

2. Please give the League of American Voters funds immediately to run ads in each of these districts. They have created a very effective ad for each of these marginal members and will run it in their districts if you give us the funding. They have raised $200,000 in the past three days but need more to blanket these swing districts.

CLICK HERE to donate. CLICK HERE to see a sample ad.

Even if you have already given the League money, do it again. Your donations have brought us to the edge of victory on health care and if you give again we can put it to a final end. Remember what is at stake! If Obama loses this fight, his entire momentum will be crippled. But, if he passes his bill it will:

* Cut $500 billion from Medicare

* Force rationing of health care

* Raise income taxes to 43% (from 35%) and capital gains taxes to 22.5% (from 15%)

* Force a $2,000 increase in the average health insurance premium

* Force young people to buy insurance they don't need or want that would cost over $8500 per person

* Or...pay 2.5% of their income as a fine for not having insurance

* Or...face prison if they don't do either

* Tax medical devices and many medical procedures

And, in addition to all of the above, it will have an horrific impact on the deficit. Don't listen to Obama's claims to deficit neutrality. The bill will cost $1 trillion over six years and will generate revenues of $1 trillion over ten years. But if you run the projections out to fourteen years, the costs exceed the revenues by over $1 trillion. These projections do not include about $1 trillion in health insurance premiums or fines that the uninsured will have to pay and about $3 trillion in increased health insurance premiums the rest of us will have to pay.

The Cato Institute estimates that the total cost of this bill over a twenty year period will come to $6.5 trillion.

To support the League of American Voters in their efforts to stop Obama -- Go Here Now.

So...please make the calls and write your checks.

Our health care lies in the balance!

Thank you!!!

McCain Fights Government-Run Health Care at White House

Hello Friend

I wanted to share a quick update on Senator McCain's latest efforts yesterday to stop President Obama's planned government take over of our health care system.

As you may know, Republican leaders selected Senator McCain as one of the leaders at the White House Health Care Summit yesterday to present our conservative views directly to President Obama and the Democrats, face-to-face.

Senator McCain's message yesterday was clear: Scrap the Democrats' plan for a government takeover of your health care and start over.

Senator McCain stood up against the President's government-run plan that Americans just can't afford. He clearly described how for all of President Obama's promises of change, his 2,400-page bill is riddled with sweetheart deals for a favored few like the atrocious "Cornhusker Kickback" and "Louisiana Purchase."
And Senator McCain made clear that jamming health care through using parliamentary games such as reconciliation is not acceptable and that he will fight any such efforts. The American people "want us to go back to the beginning," said Senator McCain, "remove all the special deals for the special interests and favored few and treat all Americans the same."

Watch Senator McCain yesterday at the White House. Senator McCain's strong case for scrapping the bill and starting over won praise from leading commentators covering yesterday's Summit:

"In the lecture from Senator John McCain and on the issue of transparency, I thought yesterday the Democrats were pretty much on their knees." -- A.B. Stoddard, Fox News

"That terrific exchange with John McCain in which John McCain said Americans oppose the process, that was the Republican point." -- Juan Williams, Fox News

Senator McCain knows that our fight against the government takeover of your health care is far from over and we must continue fighting. This legislation can't be fixed -- it must be defeated -- and start over. We need Senator McCain in there standing up for Arizonans every inch of the way just like he did yesterday. Thank you for your continued support.

See you on the campaign trail,

Shiree Verdone

Campaign Manager

P.S.: In an radio interview this morning, Arizona Congressman John Shadegg (District 3) called out J.D. Hayworth for being a big spender during his time in Congress. Rep. Shadegg said that Hayworth was a big fan of "earmark" pork barrel spending, and that when Shadegg and other conservatives tried to take on the big spenders, "J.D. was on the other side of those fights." So much for the "Consistent Conservative." Listen to Rep. Shadegg’s radio interview here.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty endorses John McCain!

2/26/10

Politico reports that Gov. Tim Pawlenty has backed Sen. John McCain for reelection in Arizona.

McCain is facing a fierce challenge from Tea Party candidate J.D."BIRTHER" Hayworth.

Pawlenty, who’s considered a contender for the 2012 Republican nomination for president, was on the shortlist of potential McCain runningmates in 2008, losing out to Sarah Palin.

Pawlenty announced his support for McCain on Missouri radio station 97.1 FM.

“I’ve known him for 20 years or more, and I respect him and know that he’s got a candidate in the primary, but yeah I do support Sen. McCain”
Pawlenty told St. Louis radio host Jamie Allman.

He reiterated that support on Minnesota Public Radio.

J.D. "BIRTHER" HAYWORTH'S CHEAP PUBLICITY STUNT!

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE VIDEO!

Yesterday, while Senator JOHN McCAIN was in Washington D.C. attending the Health Care Summit, his 'opponent' J.D. "BIRTHER" Hayworth showed up at McCain's Campaign Headquarters demanding 10 debates. Hayworth said that there should be a debate "in every County in Arizona"! (Sorry JD that's 15 Counties at last count, its your Obama 57 states moment)

"Former Congressman Hayworth's desperate publicity stunt today re-emphasizes what this race is all about: Who will be most effective for Arizonans in the U.S. Senate," says Brian Rogers, McCain's communication director. "While Senator McCain is today leading the fight on behalf of Arizonans to stop the government takeover of our healthcare system, Mr. Hayworth held a press conference in our campaign parking lot."

Rogers goes on to say that McCain welcomes any certified debate.

From one of the reporters covering the "event":

During the press conference Hayworth held after delivering his letter, reporters seemed more interested in whether Hayworth was a "birther" than the political stunt he had just pulled or the debates he requested.

As usual, Hayworth managed to shuck and jive his way out of the "birther" accusations without actually answering the question of whether he is one.

Where on the desperation chart would J.D. rank marching into an opponent's campaign office -- when the guy isn't even there -- to deliver a letter in front of every media outlet in town?

John Shadegg, Joe Scarborough laugh at J.D. Hayworth By Andy Barr - Politico.com

2/25/10

Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz.) and “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough had some fun at J.D. Hayworth’s expense on Thursday.

All three served as Republicans in Congress when Newt Gingrich was Speaker of the House, and Shadegg has endorsed Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in his re-election bid against Hayworth.

Talking with Scarborough on the former Congressman’s radio show Thursday, Shadegg sarcastically said Hayworth – a tea party favorite who has questioned the president’s place of birth – is “very balanced.”

“So you’re now going to take away your support for John McCain and support Hayworth?” Scarborough asked.

“I don’t think that’s happening,” Shadegg responded while laughing.

Asked by Scarborough if he remembered Hayworth, who served in the House from 1995 to 2007, as a conservative member, Shadegg said
“He had a fairly conservative voting record when he was in the House, but he was an earmarker.”

Scarborough then recalled one episode during his time in Congress when he and Shadegg were dressed down by Hayworth and Gingrich.

“John Shadegg and I along with about seven, eight, nine Republicans used to give Newt Gingrich hell after Newt decided he liked earmarks and liked big spending. And [Gingrich] liked teaming up with Dave Obey and attacking us, and I’m quoting Newt, as ‘jihadists,’”

Scarborough said. “So Newt called us ‘jihadists’ and I remember our friend JD Hayworth standing up in those caucus meetings and just beating the hell out of us.”

Hayworth, Scarborough recalled, was “saying how dare you do this to poor Newt, blah, blah, blah, blah. And all we were trying to do was balance the budget.”

“Yeah, that’s right,” Shadegg responded. “J.D. was on the other side of those fights from us ‘jihadists.’”

Brewer Continues Real Action to Battle Illegal Immigration

Brewer Continues Real Action to Battle Illegal Immigration

Takes the Feds to task on SCAAP funding and sets the record straight with Dean Martin on sending illegal prisoners to ICE overnor

PHOENIX –– Governor Brewer took President Obama to task today for dramatically under funding the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP) in his proposed budget.

In fact, Obama’s $330 million Budget for the SCAAP funding for all 50 states and local jurisdictions isn’t even enough to cover the federal obligations in Arizona which stand at over $700 million.

Obama continues to under fund the federal government obligations on illegal immigration, despite Governor Brewer personally expressing the needs to the President regarding SCAAP funding when he visited Arizona on May 13 last year.

This action is the latest in Governor Brewer’s substantive efforts to make the federal government cover their obligations. The Governor has ordered the transfer, to the federal government, of non-violent criminal illegal aliens who have 90 days left on their terms. This move is saving Arizona hundreds of thousands of dollars.

“The Governor has the courage to take meaningful action to fight illegal immigration and force the federal government to pay for their obligations. She isn’t presenting them with cardboard checks or unpaid invoices,” said Campaign Co-Chair Grant Woods.

State Treasurer and potential candidate for governor, Dean Martin, has been busy mischaracterizing these actions and ignoring their impact on the state budget deficit.

On multiple occasions, Mr. Martin has characterized this action as simply releasing illegal aliens out of jail early, which is false.

Martin said in a recent LD 21 Republican meeting on February 10th saying:
“I don’t know if you’ve heard but the Governor is releasing illegals early. If you commit burglary and you are legal citizen, you serve your full term. If you are here illegally, you get out 90 days early. I have a better idea of what to do with those last 90 days. Lets take a page out of the chain gangs, lets take them down to the border and have them finish the wall.”

“Not only is Mr. Martin not telling the truth about what Governor Brewer is doing, his chain gang alternative would actually cost the state tens of thousands of dollars,” concluded Woods.

“Border security and the incarceration of alien criminals is a federal responsibility that should not be born on the back of the Arizona General Fund. It would be nice if Mr. Martin would either be honest, or come up with an idea more like Governor Brewer’s, one that would actually save the state money instead of costing us more.”

Sen. John McCain Blasts 'Unsavory Deal-Making' at Health Care Summit

McCain vs. Obama at health care summit!

McCain finished, "Could I just say, Mr. President, the American people care about what we did and how we did it?"

Obama agreed, adding, "I think that the way you characterized it obviously would get some strong objections from the other side. We can have a debate about process or we can have a debate about how we're actually going to help the American people at this point. And I
think that's -- the latter debate's the one that they care about a little bit
more."

After a lunch break, McCain briefly reiterated his distaste for a provision that exempts 800,000 seniors in Florida from cuts to Medicare Advantage, to which Obama briefly replied: "I think you make a legitimate point."

McCain gestured as if to make another point, but then sat back silently in apparent pleasure at his victory.

CCAGWPAC Endorses Sen. John McCain in Arizona Primary

Washington, D.C. - The Council for Citizens Against Government Waste Political Action Committee (CCAGWPAC) today endorsed Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) in the Republican primary race for U.S. Senate in Arizona.

“Senator McCain has been a stalwart taxpayer ally and leader in the war on waste,” said CCAGWPAC Chairman Tom Schatz. “His 88 percent lifetime rating on CCAGW’s Congressional Ratings is the seventh highest in the U.S. Senate. After 23 years in the Senate that record is especially impressive, since the longer a legislator stays in Washington, the more likely he or she is to vote for more spending and higher taxes. Sen. McCain has been an outspoken proponent for smaller, more efficient government throughout his Senate and House career. He has been especially steadfast in sticking to those values after the big spenders took charge of all of the levers of government in January 2009.”

“Sen. McCain was anti-earmark before being anti-earmarking was considered cool. He has offered dozens of amendments to eliminate pork-barrel projects, often with little support from his colleagues but always with the gratitude of the American people.

  • Taxpayers have Sen. McCain him to thank for the fact that, slowly but surely, members of Congress are finding it harder and harder to get away with funding their egregious earmarks.

  • Taxpayers have Sen. McCain to thank for the fact that lawmakers are now being held more accountable for their spending choices.

  • Taxpayers have Sen. McCain to thank for the fact that there is constant pressure being brought to bear on Congress and this administration to be even more transparent. There is much more to do to rein in runaway federal spending.

  • Taxpayers from Arizona, indeed around the nation, need Sen. McCain to remain in Washington, taking the battle to the enemy in the war on waste, as he has always done.

CCAGWPAC is proud to be among the first national taxpayer organizations’ PACs to endorse Sen. McCain, and we encourage every voter in Arizona to support Sen. McCain in the primary.”

CCAGWPAC is affiliated with the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste, a 501(c)(4) organization. CCAGWPAC’s mission is to support political candidates who will fight to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse in government and represent the best interests of taxpayers.
